Johann Derecho, Piano
Johann Derecho is a high school student from Canada who has just turned eighteen. He is also a young pianist whose life is wholly centered around music: he is a piano accompanist and soloist at various local events, he plays trombone in a school band, enjoys singing, also enjoys giving piano performances at his church and at local senior residences. However, his most beloved challenge is to participate in music festivals and piano competitions and have his talent acknowledged and rewarded.
Johann was born in the Philippines and his parents brought him to Canada when he was three years old. At the age of five, Johann‘s extraordinary gift in music became apparent: he could name notes and chords by ear after just a few sessions with his piano teacher. An examiner called him a prodigy at the age of seven.
His progress has been steady since and Johann has grown into a rounded young piano virtuoso, capable of delivering strong emotions while showing extraordinary technique. He is a fearless, passionate performer who gets energized and inspired by audiences and delivers strongly in return.
Johann‘s ease of studying piano is outstanding: he can learn technically challenging pieces extremely fast and with unparalleled ease. His special talent has been recognized in competitions year after year.
Johann Derecho is the winner of the Symphony on the Bay Young Artist Competition, after which he performed with the Symphony On The Bay Orchestra in Burlington, Ontario. He also won the 2nd place in the National Finals of the Canadian Music Competition in the 13-year old category. Johann placed first at many prestigious music festivals and competitions in Ontario, such as the Richmond Hill Music Festival, the Chinese Cultural Centre Piano Competition in Toronto, the North York Music Festival in Toronto.
He also won the 2015 ORMTA Young Artist Competition and the ORMTA awarded him also with the Esther Su Memorial Award for the most promising talent in the three ORMTA competitions whose finals were adjudicated in July 2015 (Young Artist, Instrumental and Vocal). As a winner of the Young Artist provincial title, Johann gave a concert tour in the province of Ontario in the fall of 2015.
Johann won the Founder’s Award at the North York Music Festival, this brought him a scholarship and invitation to attend a music festival in the Netherlands. In that festival, he was awarded an invitation to play with one of the best orchestras in Spain in July of 2017.
For the past several years Johann Derecho has been taking piano lessons with Sergei Pavlov of Toronto, concert pianist and piano pedagogue hailing from the legendary tradition of the Russian school of piano playing with roots in the renowned Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
